Computer Safety Tips: Hardware, Software & Data Protection

To keep your computer and the information in it safe, follow these tips:

Hardware

  • Attach computers, laptops and components securely to the desk or floor.
  • Keep an accurate inventory list of all valuable equipment, including serial numbers. If it is lost, stolen or destroyed, you will have all the information you need to have it replaced.

Software & Data

  • Change your password regularly. Use a password of at least 6 characters, which is not related to anything personal (such as your birth date). Use a combination of characters, numbers and letters.
  • Visit your operating system's web site regularly, and install any updates to your software, especially if it is labeled as being critical to the security of your system.
  • Install a firewall. A firewall is a system that protects your network from being accessed by outside users.
  • Install an anti-virus program, and update it regularly. Never send or receive e-mail without an up-to-date anti-virus program enabled on your system, which will check each message for viruses before it comes in or goes out. Do regular scans to check for viruses in your entire system as well.
  • Do not automatically open e-mail attachments. Only open attachments that you are expecting; and even then make sure you have anti-virus software. If you get an attachment you are not expecting, always check with the sender before opening it. Never open an attachment from someone you do not know.
  • Always keep up-to-date backup copies of your data. This protects you not only against theft, but also against fire or other catastrophes.
  • When upgrading or replacing your computer, remember to remove all data from your hard drive before disposing of it.
